Police Application - Mark McLoughlin
Please tell us about any other skills you have such as driving or language skills and any voluntary or community activities you have been involved with including activities relevant to support your application. I received a qualification in both French and Spanish languages whilst at high school, The qualifications required both oral and written examinations. I was accepted for the voluntary role of ‘travel officer’ whilst in the first year of college, this role required me to monitor the behaviour of students whilst using college provided transport, communication was an important part of the role as I was required to write up a detailed account of any incidents and provide them as a form of evidence to the college. When I first thought about applying for the police force, I took it upon myself to complete a course in self defence to help maintain my physical fitness, I enjoyed attending various training weekends alongside of my structured training routine which involves gym training and long distance runs on a weekly basis. Being a member of the scout and explorer association from 2007-2010 I was eventually promoted to (SPL) Senior Patrol Leader in final year, where it became my duty to arrange patrol excercises and organise group activities. I am also a qualified first aider and have sucessfully passed a fire safety course which enables me to understand the dangers of fires and the best ways to tackle them. Whilst a member of the scouts and explorers I attended over 36 outdoor pursuits and team building weekends, and completed over 126 hours of voluntary work which I feel would play an invaluable source of experience as a special constable. Why do you want to become a Special Constable? (to be completed in no more than 250 words) Working in the police force has been a lifeling ambition, I feel becoming a special constable will aid me in giving something back to my local community, It will help me to develop new skills and it will also be a great source of gaining valuable communication experience with people from all walks of life. Challenges are a part of life I enjoy and becoming part of the special constabulary will present me with new challenges on a daily basis. As a special constable I would develop a first hand experience of the police force and the people that work within it, whilst assisting regular officers in their line of duty to the public. How long have you been seriously thinking about becoming a Special Constable and what first got you interested? Becoming a part of the police force has been a lifelong ambition, It has been within the last few years that I have decided becoming a special constable would be a suitable option to gaining a first hand experience of police work whilst at university, it would also prepare me for full time work as a regular police constable. What are your expectations of the duties of a Special Constable? As a special constable I expect to work unsociable hours where their may be a need of extra officers, I believe as a special constable I will also be required to undertake community patrols to show a visible community interaction and be on the frontline of the police crime and prevention initiation. I’m certain that assisting regular officers and working large scale public operations are also an important part of the special constable’s expectations. What research/preparation have you undertaken prior to completing this application? Before completing this application form I have researched in depth the role and expectations of a special constable, I have also taken it upon myself to speak to several officers within the force who have provided me with a valuable insight into what the job requires and how I can be of assistance to regular officers as a special constable.
